2014 Sentra temperature gauge Sign In

2014 Nissan Sentra 1.8L 53000 miles
Normally when the key is removed from the ignition, all the dials go to 0. Recently, the temperature gauge occasionally doesn't return to cold, even though the engine has been off for 24 hours. Most times it does, but not always. So the temp gauge will read operating temperature even though it was just started. As I drive, it goes up the ~1 inch on the dial to make it look like it's running hot, but it's not: what's happening is the gauge's "floor" is simply wrong. I even had it double up on me once where the gauge didn't return to 0 two days in a row and the gauge read a half-inch above H - an impossible temperature. Mechanic has already replaced thermostat, done a flush and fill, replaced a hose that was just starting to develop a bubble, and maybe something else.

My question is this: is it possible to fix this without replacing the cluster?

Why would he replace engine parts when the car has been shut off for 24 hours when you're looking at the gauge? No connection at all.

You most likely have a bad dash gauge. that would be confirmed if you remove it and it still reads hot.
