I have a 1989 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban w/ 350 tbi. truck has 155k miles on it. truck has run fine but recently went to start and would crank over but not start. i repl fuel pump, strainer, fuel filter. truck will start but after running for a little bit will stall out or if driving will act like it wants to die so have to throttle it to stay running. some days it will still not want to start. i really have no idea what to do. i have been told could be map sensor or that for some reason there is a vapor lock happening. i would really apreciate some advice on what could possibly cause this or what I can do to repair....

Vapor lock is not possible. The first step is to monitor the fuel pressure while this is going on. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Is this something I can do or would be better to take to a shop?

I wouldn't know what you can or can't do. If you replaced the fuel pump on your own you should be able to monitor the fuel pressure. You'll need a fuel pressure tester and will have to adapt it in order for it to reach inside your truck so you can monitor it while you're having the symptoms. If your fuel pressure isn't where it needs to be you then know you have a fuel related issue and can go from there. If fuel pressure is good you then know to look elsewhere.

Like HT & MG have said it would be good to know what your fuel pressue is......These systems can be a pita to check since there is no schrader valve to hook up to, you basically have to tap into the system....Most guys will tap in at the filter, they make adaptors that will hook in there but if you aren't doing this work alot it wouldn't make sense to buy one.......I know some parts house loan/rent gauges, you may check & see if they have the T adaptor as well.... One thing that would help would be to check for spark & fuel when it doesn't start......

Spray some ether down the intake when its not starting. If it tries to fire off of that you know you have a fuel issue. If you get nothing you're chasing a spark issue.

Not vapor lock but: There were some older Suburbans that did route fuel line (to carbs) too close to hot air off of radiator that would bog from a long stop after running. Didn't prevenet starting just the line was placed to close to hot items and air. Still ran and started and went away once moving along. Rare but real. Fixed one, 1983 'Burp (carbed), T

This truck is fuel injected and that is not possible on this truck.

That's what I said! Not vapor lock, not on that one. It's not even the syptoms when that was more common back in the stone age-- Tom
