I have a 91 sunbird with a 3.1l engine. The car has sat for a about 1 year. When I tried to start it the other day it cranks over fine and it seems to be getting fuel. It has started once or twice but runs rough. when cranking and you let off the starter you hear the injectors still activating. does any one have any thoughts Thanks for any help.

Is this to say it runs but lousy? If it was running well when left for a year then it probably will again. I'd be doing some tune-up items like plugs, wires perhaps, fuel filter check air filter also and some solvent in the gas that's left as that's getting old now and could be a problem, T

Thanks for your advice I have already checked the plugs and wires also put on a new fuel filter. I believe it is something in the electronics because with the key on you hear the injectors trying to fire with out the car running. the car will start occasionally but runs terrible.

Ok: Not sure what your think you are hearing with fuel injectors?? Isn't this CPI? Fuel left for a year is probably the source of the trouble but who can be sure? A code reading might help. Can you determine if the problem is just certain cylinders or randomly running poorly? Either way it's got to get straightened out before it screws up o2 sensors and converter(s) as they won't take that well. There are a lot of "could be's" with this. See if you can find what is missing when it doesn't start at all -- either spark or lack of fuel. You could try cleaning throttle body and see if it helps. Still think some junk may be restricting proper fuel injection with this but that's just guessing, T

The bad thing is that I do not have a check engine light on. I know the injectors are pulsing with the key on and not started because I have used a stereoscope and can hear each one pulsate at different intervals.

Will it fire at all or not now? Injectors should not be spitting fuel with just key in run position without engine running so I'm not sure what you are listening to. Will it fire up with starter fluid? T

I am sorry I was gone out of town for a few days for a graduation. I thought i was hearing the injectors but I was wrong what i was hearing is the EGR valve clicking. I checked for fuel pressure and have about 42 psi. I also drained all old gas installed new plugs and new wires. The car will start and the die. wont start any better with starting fluid either. I have had the car started and running for about 1/2 hour by feathering the throttle. after it warmed up it seemed to run fine but then today I can not even get it to start. Thanks for all your help
