92 Plymouth Acclaim start problem Sign In

my 92 acclaim has a problem with starting.

it won't start easily in the morning or whenever I leave the car not using for more than 6 to 12 hours.

everything looks okay, but it takes me to start this car more than 5 minutes.
once it gets started, it exhausts smoke for a short time.
and after starting, the problem's gone as long as I don't leave the car not using for certain time.

so, during the day time, because I keep driving it, the engine starts very well, but after I came back home, leave the car at the parking lot, then next morning the problem comes back.

I tried using starting fluid but it wouldn't help.
When I turn the key, check engine signal blinks 5 times and short pause and then 5 times again. Does this mean something? I heard it could be map sensor but I have no idea because I am no mechanic.

Can anyone help me on this problem please?

If you have a "check enginge" light you have a stored code. I hear that you can get that info from some parts stores one being AutoZone for free. It could be a lot of things and just replacing stuff will be costly as it's probably just one thing. My 2 cents - I don't think it's your MAP (Manifold Actual Pressure) sensor but can't say for sure. The code would help a lot. Good luck, T

I check the code again, it was 12 - 55 which came out to be nothing wrong.
Thanks for your advice, Tom. Anyone has an idea please?

Trash the fuel filter unless you just did. Just a thought for now, T

Thanks again Tom,

I haven't checked the fuel pump yet.
I do not know much about a car, so could you explain how to do it?
Do I need special tools or anything?

One more thing, I heard that it could be an aged fuel pump that cannot hold gas for longer period of time.
Does anyone know where Acclaim 92's fuel pump is and how to change it?

Thanks in advance and excuse my bad English. :)

Fuel pumps are almost always in the gas tank. You can hear them buzz and shut off with just your ignition key in run position without starting the car. That is normal and it SHOULD do that. After that you need to check its pressure output which takes the tools to do that. It's as silly as checking your tire pressure but the kit for it is probably $300 so even I let my buddies in the biz do the ones I question.

I'm almost completly retired with about $40,000 bucks in tools now and that's enough!

When your car acts up try just turning the key to "run" and let the fuel pressure build up - it may work for now. My own bro had a car that did that and the dealer wouldn't fix it because it ran?? It was new and that trick worked. Good luck with it and let us know how you are making out with it. T
