i have a 92 ford ranger with a 4.0. it will start right up sometimes and run fine for awhile then starts running with miss. i thought it was only doing it when it was warm but it will do it on its own sometimes. the person i got the truck from changed, the crankshaft sensor, the fuel pump, and several other sensors and parts. i have narrowed down to the fact that at times im not getting fire to the injectors correctly if at all. i found that if i put fuel into the air breather it will start and run on the fuel to the air breather. it is getting fuel to the injectors just not fire. my question is what tell the injectors to fire. other than the ecm. if this engine has a camshaft position sensor i am beginnin to assume that is what it is. however i would think that i would not get fire to the plugs if that be the case. any help would be appreciated.

How did you test and found out that the injectors weren't being commanded? Did you check for power to the injectors and command from the ECM? What is the fuel pressure when the problem is occurring? The engine will run without the cam sensor signal because the ECM's software will default to batch firing when there is no cam sensor signal present. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

actually i assumed that there was no fire to the injectors consideringt that the engine would run with fuel poored directly into the air breather assembly. it only makes sense that if it will run with gas straight to the intake. the injectors are the means of getting fuel to the cylinders. i has crossed my mind that without a camshaft sensor it would go into a batch fire injection. which i think it might do sometime because it runs so rough. i have heard of a thing called a noid light to test the injectors. it seems like it would be a decent investment for automotive repairs. my next step was to check fuel pressure to see whats going on which is something i should have done in the first place just havent had the time. once again i assumed that the fuel pressure was not a problem considering that it had a new fuel pump.

I know that assuming in the automotive repair industry can get you into big trouble. You are correct in that the injectors are the way fuel gets into the engine, but there are other factors that must be present for the injectors to operate. Finding a NOID light to see if you have injector pulse is a good idea. That would let you know if the injectors have power and the ECM is grounding their control circuits. Of course even if the injectors are getting commands and operating, you still need the correct fuel pressure in the rail. It would be a good idea to verify fuel pressure even though you had replaced the fuel pump. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
