Timing chain cover for this 93 6 cyl engine has studs from block through cover. In trying to 'tap off' the cover, as instructed by a Haynes Manual, the cover promptly cracked and half the cover came off. Two studs nearest the firewall will not let go the remaining cover, and is this typical? Do you force off the remaining cover from the studs, or have no choice but to risk the studs breaking of in the block?

Did you get the bolt out by the oil filter adapter? You should be able to double nut the studs, so you can unscrew them. They are probably corroded and holding the cover up. If they snap off when trying to get them out, you'll have to extract them, which is a PITA if they snap off flush with the block. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
