I have a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis with a 4.6, auto trans, and 125,000 miles. The rear main seal is leaking, how many hours are involved in this repair and how likely is the repair to work and last?

It calls for 2.8 hours and the transmission would have to be removed. It may or may not be a permanent repair. many times the seals wear due to crankshaft movement due to main bearing wear and if that is the case it will likely happen again. If it's just a deteriorated seal, the problem will be repaired. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

A lot of times the leak comes from the plate that holds the rear main in place. It is just sealed with gasket maker and will leak. I would mention that to who does the job. Below is a picture of the seal housing. Sometimes people just want to remove the seal only and it will still leak, Good luck. Sorry, the picture is upside down. Can you tell me the total number of hours to complete the job, as I would like to see if the estimates I'm given are in the ball Park.

No, it's only a few minutes work after the trans is removed.
