This problem began about a week ago...i have always had the check engine light on and every time i was told its nothing tooo serious but mainly emissions problem with the catalytic converter. I stopped paying attention months ago. So recently, while driving the car would accelerate ok, drive ok but when you ease off on the gas or are accelerating gently under 2500 rpm, the car stutter's and becomes a bit hesitant. Even on the highway while doing 60-ish, when you let go off the gas lightly, it would stutter. Now, i waited till my gas was below E and filled up with a higher octane, replaced filter (it was dirty) and used lucas fuel cleaner, nothing....BUT, the check engine light disappeared. I drained the coolant and flushed it....nothing... Done the oil change about 500 miles ago and air filter about 4000 miles ago. Replaced the pcv valve a few days ago...nothing I barely drive it...i work from home. What could be the problem? It still stutters and hesitant...any suggestions?

It would be a good idea to get the codes pulled anyway to see if there is something else stored in memory.... I know there are some codes that aren't as serious as others. The problem with ignoring an SES is there is a problem going on that isn't getting addressed but also if another failure is to happen you are unaware of this. The SES doesn't get bigger or brighter, it just stores the additional code. Granted if it is a real serious failure the SES may flash. The best thing to do would be to do all over dud maintenance. plugs, wires, etc. Clean the throttle body, mass air flow sensor. If the problem is still there, when letting off the gas, put in neutral and see if that makes the difference. But honestly if some of this basic stuff doesn't fix your problem and it's not coding, you may have to take it in to be checked out..........

I got it!! I cant believe that after doing all that i did, the problem was just that i needed a set of spark plug wires....!!! I cleaned the fuel using Lucas, replaced filter, clean ed the throttle body, new spark plugs, air filter, radiator flush....nothing!! Then finally i replaced the spark plug wires and bam! The car doesnt hesitate anymore....and yes the gas mileage improved....it had become reaaaal bad on gas! $10 would last me about 60 miles! Now i think its improved alot...the subaru power/accelaration is back....that thing hit 5000 rpm when i merging on the highway today and it took off like a horse!

Basic tune ups are very neglected. Should be a first line of defense.
