96 Mitsubishi Galant S possible transmission problem?

My main problem with this car just started yesterday- I was driving home and pushed down on the gas when my engine just revved but the car didn't accelerate. This happened a couple of times, I get no acceleration but the engine is still revving and the RPMs are going up; I also noticed my odometer is slower to react now. I'm scared to drive it as this might happen again, could I be looking at an expensive fix? Another problem I'm having happened a few days ago, I started up my car in the morning and got this weird tapping sound coming from the glovebox area- I popped my hood with the engine running and it is definitely not an engine problem, it is only coming from the inside of the car. I messed with all of my air settings and that didn't change anything...I've had my SRS light on since I bought the car but I don't see how that could be related? Any help, especially pertaining to the first question, would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Anytime an engine will rev up and car doesn't respond that's a problem. Slipping won't last long till it won't move. Not sure about this noise and SRS light should only mean it has a malfunction to be found and tending to but doubt that has a thing to do with slipping trans. Do you really want an email address as your user name? Site gets a lot of views and I suggest you just change that in you profile, T

Thank you Tom, I didn't even notice that in my username. Do you think this could be a transmission problem, possibly need a new catalytic converter? am I looking at an expensive fix?

If truly in gear and not fooled by some linkage issue which I doubt that would be a serious fix/overhaul. Glad you fixed your username and you don't lose your posts in doing so. Just wanted to save you from the spammers collecting addresses that don't need any help! If you trust it for a little more I'd let a transmission specialty shop take a look in person so you know what you are up for and perhaps a quote on the spot too and don't think it could be much more than worn out. Look at fluid color and bet it's burned now, T

Yes, I suppose that is what I'll have to do, we have a very trusted family mechanic that I can take it to, I am just afraid to drive the car across town- not sure if it will make it, and money is a bit tight right now due to slowing down at work. Thank you for your help!
