96 Town & Country stalling

96 Chrysler T&C LXi 3.8 145k miles; Driving at 60 mph running good, vehicle starts pulsating engine light flashing. Once stopped hard to start then missing badly more so when car is in reverse. Replaced plugs, wires, ignition coils, air filter still no change, check engine light no longer lit or flashing. Also removed exhaust and started vehicle to check for clogged catalytic converter still no change. Took it to a shop told me that the spark plugs need to be changed, told them they are brand new less than 2 miles on them they then told me air filter clogged, opened the air box and pulled out a brand new air filter. Wouldn't give me anymore details other than its dumping allot of fuel into the cylinders. Took vehicle out of there, need help!

Ok....I think it might be best to check out some different shops for your diagnostic work.. If you have used they guys for year for your maintenance and basic repairs, then there is no reason to stop that if you have a good relationship with them, but it doesn't sound like they are using the best procedures to track down running problems that are a little out of the ordinary..... If you could post the codes you are getting and any other accurate test results you have we may be able to help you narrow down the area your problem is coming from......

That is a problem, not returning any codes. only have a small hand held OBD reader but have pc software on order so I can see real time data. Is there a way to get the computer to do a diagnostic through all the sensors? The shop has only done routine maintenance for my company vehicle never any real work for me as I usually do all my own mechanical work.

Sometimes the code reader aren't completely accurate. If the SES light is flashing, that indicates a serious misfire. There would have to be something stored...somewhere There is no diagnostic routine a PCM will run for techs. While there are monitoring systems than run self checks. That is just to verify that a system or component is functioning within specified parameters. Once something in the circuit fails a code is set indicating what system is having the problem. Then it up to the tech to trace the circuit down and find the problem. Some of the tools shops use can be misleading. It can really look like the tool is doing the work and just needs anyone to operate it. When if fact it's just that, another tool to be used to aid a tech in finding the problem. If the user isn't familiar with it, doesn't know how to operate it or interpret it's reading,,,,, then the tool is useless..... I'm not familiar with the exact software you are referring to but it sounds like some of the diagnostic software the old "big box" engine analyzers used (and what helped contributed to the myth of the machines telling you what was wrong). There would be a series of cranking, fuel, gas & ignition tests you could run on all cars. The computer would look at the results and based on what test were out of specs, suggest all the common failures for the out of spec result (never once listing one single cause). This was actually good for an entry level tech new to diags. It would help them get familiar with the reading and possible causes and areas that needed to be looked at. Any intermediate or advanced level tech wouldn't need to run that program just because they would already be aware of what the out of specs reading meant and what needed to be tested.... That being said this software, if it is the same type would be very good for someone who isn't familiar with the readings. But be aware it would just be telling COMMON possible failures for any out of spec readings and areas to check AND it would only be as good as the programmer/s that wrote it. I.E. if the problem is something they didn't think about of forgot......you could be in a world of hurt.... Todate....There is no machine or computer that you can hook up to your system and it would tell the exact problem you are having....It doesn't exist.........

lol @ HT could it be possible when it started to run horrible and since that it jumped a bit on the timing? GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012

Update; I have replaced the injectors, plugs, wires, map sensor, intake gaskets and coil pack still no change. Engine will start cold but misses then loads up until floods out. I can remove the #5 and #6 plug wires no change but did verify there is spark. If it jumped timing would it run at all? hooked it up to scan tool software and a lap top, timing jumps from 30degrees to 6 degrees and back while at idle fuel trim is at -25% intake pressure at 18hg. Fuel pressure is correct at 49psi. I guess next is compression test on 5 and 6 to see if valves are stuck?

It's late so this probably won't be my best answer. When you are talking about timing are you talking about cam/ckp differential or actual timing? If it's the latter see if you have a differential PID and see what that is. What bank is that trim # from? What are both banks tirms @ idle & high rpm? For some reason it sounds like you have sync problem. Those did have a problem with the flexplate (flywheel) spinning and the ckp sync getting off. If you can get up there and see the hub that bolts to the crank and there is a ring of rust where the plate is pressed onto the hub there may be something going on there. If it just jump a tooth or 2 it would run but with no power, high trims & low vacuum. If you could scope it the pattern would be off and obvious. I also seem to remember something about the fuel rail getting junk in it that gets packed in there from the fuel pulses and when it gets deep enough will take out the back 2 cylinders...... If you could get a full data stream at idle & 2k and post, that could be helpful............. Gotta think about this for a bit, I feel like I'm missing something here...........

Thanks for your help don"t think the timing is an issue as much as there is no compression in cylinders 5 and 6. When I took the valve covers off and started it the rockers are not moving. I am hoping for failed lifters but suspect to the cam.
