97 GMC Jimmy I think is overheating?

Just putting this upfront, I know just about nothing about cars so bear with me. I have had the truck for about 6 months (i got it from my dad last summer who took pretty good care of it) and nothing has really gone wrong with it since then. Just recently I was driving home from school (about a ten minute drive) and when I got home, I hear sizzeling coming from the truck and I smelled something burning I think. I lifted the hood, not knowing what to look for, and I felf quite a bit of heat coming from the engine, I think. So I think that it is overheating, but I'm not really sure what to do. I dont want to bring it in to a garage and being charged an arm and a leg for something simple I might be able to do at home, but Im afraid to drive with it like this. And if this helps at all, I am due for an oil change, I am probably about 400 miles over the 3000 mile mark. I dont know if that matters, but I am getting that done very soon, but I figured Id throw that out there incase that could mean anything.

Jake - First move should be to read the entire operators manual! You seriously need to know a tad more about a vehicle if you are going to be reponsible for it at all. What does the temp gauge read when driving? Are fluids all at proper levels? the 3,000 oil change interval is a good idea for most everyone. You should still be checking it yourself for level regularly along with other things - tire pressure, fluid levels - that's a owner's responibility or trust me you'll pay for it. Operators/Owner's manual will have many generic things to show you how to check levels and what gauge readings mean. For temp - it should stay steady once warmed up an NOT deviate while operating. If it does there's trouble even if it reads within norms it should be steady. There are TWO place to check coolant level. One you can see thru a overflow/recovery bottle and again at the radiator cap - WHEN cool enough that there is no pressure! Start with that now and if low go ahead and fill with proper 50/50 pre mixed coolant - sold that way or mix your own. Report back as it shouldn't be low at all and look for obvios leaks, T
