Good Day all I am having some temperature issues and would love some advice. When the car is at normal running temperature the temperature gauge is on completely cold. When the car is getting so hot that you can see steam coming off the bonnet the temperature gauge is half way and never goes higher. With this the radiator fan never engages either. What can I try to solve this issue? Audi A3 1.8T 2002.

Good Day back at you: When a temp gauge is reading HOT if you mean abnormal you are supposed to shut down engine sport then find out why fast. Checks you should be able to do include pressure test cooling system look for coolant leaks and if so test pressure cap as well. It's the season for these surprises if it can't hold pressure there is probably spot inside boiling almost sure you see it too. Vapor is slow to send signals for things to operate normally. Hope for a faulty pressure cap should come with tester kit especially if no leaks found. Heat is an real enemy of engines so beware this may have already from a first problem gone on to seriously harm engine include head gasket(s) up to warpage or cracks as the coolant level now can't be properly full. Stinks but you have to act right away on those warnings or be real lucky if no damage by the time steam is seen, Test away, T
