Broke my timing belt like an idiot Sign In

02 Ford Focus 2.0 SOHC w/ 120K miles
Hey all,

I know, I know, should've had it replaced, but I couldn't, and I'd appreciate any help I can get. My SPI's timing belt broke at a traffic light the other day, no sound heard. I mention that because I've heard that the valves might not be bent if you were traveling below 45 MPH (I was at about 40). Anyway, the car just shut off, and I tried to start it, but I would just turn over without catching. I had a guy come look at it today, and he could tell that the belt was broken. He suggested changing the belt, while hoping the valves were not bent. He also said that if they are, the car would drive crappy, and he whole head may need to be replaced (I understand all of this). Shopping around in preparation, I found a rebuilt head online with redone valve seats!

If I bought that and the new gaskets, he'd do the change at my place for $380. Sound reasonable? More importantly, does it sound like the best way to approach this? On the other hand, I've got a few offers to buy the car for $2K, which I can then use to buy something else. Should I sell it, should I buy all the parts right away, or should I just throw a new belt on and hope for the best? Thanks!

That engine is not an interference engine so you don't have anything to worry about.

May I ask where you got that info? I don't want to throw a belt on there and run it without knowing for sure.

My sources can be trusted, don't worry about that.

If you have any doubts, do a leakdown test before taking it apart.

The man owns a shop. He has access to dealership level info on your car. I would trust his advice far beyond the guy who wants to do a head job outdoors in your driveway which is a surefire way to send a car to a scrapyard to be recycled into beer cars. I love beer, you love having a car. Whichever you choose one of us will win.

Yep, rubs me the wrong way when I donate my time to help people and they question what I tell them.

not everyone understands what ASE is HT. Had to explain it to plenty of people myself. Now if only it was called Google you'd be taken seriously.

Re: Broke my timing belt like an idiot Sign In

Thanks for the advice. Please understand, new people here don't always instantly recognize who's who, or what they do, and in turn, they are criticized for it. Stickys can't explain everything, and 2 hours of Googling yielded contrary answers from amateurs and certified techs alike. Anyhow, I appreciate your help nonetheless.
