Not sure why you would have removed a distributor to replace a timing belt as that would not have been necessary but here are the installation instructions. If it's just the belt that you are trying to time, here are the marks for that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I just gave you all the timing marks. If you're not familiar with setting a timing belt you may want to have a shop do this for you.

Help!! Wait, you dont understand what I am My thinking on this! What Iam asking is :Since the timing belt broke cams stopped Do the camshafts now have to be rotated in a certain direction? Also do they have to be rotated several times to get into a certain position! So, shall I just get set it to top dead center and align the cams accordinlg to the marks on the diagram! Next, The crank gear doesnt have a mark on the gear so, do you line it with keyway with the mark on the housing?

Please don't create duplicate questions. i deleted your other response. No, you do not have to rotate it to get it timed although doing it after the belt is installed will insure you have it on right. The crank gear does have a mark on it.

The mark is on the gear. i just gave you a picture of it. I'm really beginning to think this is not a job for you and you should be having someone else do this for you. It's an awful lot of work to take this apart a second time if it's not done right the first time.

Hammer ,I honestly know what the mark should look like !I was a yard today and looked at the same situation I have everthings removed, It looks like the diagram you sent! But am being honest,NO mark on crank gear, just key way notch! Now, if I set the crank gear to the housing mark and I have the one cam set perfectly the other is off 90 degrees! Wen I install the belt,is that going to pull the other cam into position,an those marks will line up?or will i have to manually turn the othercam in what direction for the mark to align properly?

Hammer,Wish I could but Cant no time! I get the immpression you think Iam kidding you about the mark on the crank gear!there is no mark on this crank gear! I see it on your diagram, As well about 15 other diagrams I have looked at! Can you answer me this, what is the direction will I have to manually turn the other cam to get it into position on the marks?

74jav; This is a very 'tricky' repair. As HT said, the crank gear has a mark on the outside edge. May be a 'hash' mark, or an 'O'. It, and both cam gears, must be aligned EXACTLY, as his diagram showed. Can't be off ONE tooth! Some of the older four cylinder engines were quite easy to replace a timing belt. The V6s are a whole 'nuther story. Very unforgiving. You must do it right. The first time. There is no way that I'd try to change out the power panel in my house. I'd suck up my ego and have a professional do it. Take it for what it's worth. Loren SW Washington

- Well, its easy for someone Im asking for advice to say sub it out or have somebody else do it! May be Iam thiinking way beyond the technical way you guys are analizing this! Lets make it simplefrom the start: Iam at a stop sign the car shuts down I push it acroos the street into a parking lot! At this point I pop the hood and start inspecting I discover after I pull the distibutor is not turning! So, I pull the disributor to see if the gear broke or was jammed! Iwatched how i pulled it and reinstalled the disributor into place! Now, obviously when it stopped at the stop sign I thought it just stalled so , Naturally I cranked it over a couple of times and I could tell I had a problem be it no spark or what have you!
What Iam asking simply is this; When the belt broke slowly cams stop at that point! So, Iam asking when I get this thing lined up to Tdc after we decide on what to use for a crank gear mark! How do I get the cams and the marks back to the position they should be for it to run! And what direction should the cams be turned clockwise or counter clockwise or will they just go into place when reinstall the belt??? What would be your steps to resolve if had to do it yourself?????

You have obviously never changed a timing belt before and this is not one of the easier ones to do. You are going to run into problems that you are not expecting at all. If you had any idea how to do this, you wouldn't be asking the questions that you are. All of those gears are spring loaded and this job is not for you.

The fact that you tried to turn it over after the timing belt broke is cause for concern. Unless the cam/cams stopped in an almost perfect position (which is not likely) you could have had contact between the valves and piston. I am in the middle of replacing the head gasket on my 97 Breeze and I will tell you, this job is not for the beginner mechanic, or even an advanced mechanic with limited Plymouth experience. Take the advise of the other posters and sub it out, it will save you a lot of grief, money and headaches in the long run.
