2001 Chevrolet Camaro z/28 5.7L. 134k Car will not start. I checked relays and fuses under hood and they are good. Car does turn over and attempts to start but only for a second or two. I heard no fuel pump running so I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. After changing pump I can confirm it pumps gas to fuel rail but I have 0-3 pressure at the rail. I can spray starting fluid into engine and it will start a second. I have narrowed it down to maybe the fuel injection pressure damper. Can it fail and stop sending gas to the rail? I put code reader on car and have no codes. I'm lost.

When I turn key to on the security light comes on and goes off after a few seconds.

Yes 0-3 at the rail. I took the fuel line at the rail loose and turn key to on. The pump runs two seconds and fuel comes out of the line which would then go to fuel rail. I just put more starting fluid in car to confirm in my head I had no ignition/spark issues. It fired up and ran 5 or 6 seconds then died due to no fuel. I'm stumped. I would say my new fuel pump is defective but it's the same exact issuenow as it was before I installed the new fuel pump.

Well, I can tell you one thing for sure. That car will not run on 3PSI of fuel pressure. The spec is 55 to 60PSI and not a pound less. Yes I do. I can easily pull the pump and get another but yt? I hate to do that if it is producing fuel to the rail. Only thing is, is the pump providing enough fuel to the rail.

No, the pump is not producing sufficient fuel to the rail and don't assume the pump itself is the cause. "The pump runs two seconds " and then shuts down is correct, normal operation without engine running.. Have we discussed codes? Are there any modifications? Did you check the fuel filter ? I believe a chassis mounted filter on 01 Camaro...

There are no modifications to the car. I also had no indication there was an issue until I pulled into a parking lot and then went to leave in the car did not start. I had it towed to my house. I also put a code reader on the car, but I also had unplugged my battery previously . It showed no codes, but I'm not sure if I'm unplugging the battery would mess this up?

You should make some electrical checks at the fuel pump relay. When you first turn the ignition on, the relay should click on for a few seconds and then click off. You can also use a 12 volt test light or volt meter to make some electrical checks in the relay cavity. If the relay click on and then off, that tells you the control side is working. Another method is to jump 30 to 87 in the relay cavity to send power to the fuel pump. You should hear the pump run when you do this. If it doesn't run, make sure you have power all the time on terminal 30 in the cavity and then check for power down at the pump. If you have power at the pump, make sure the pump's ground circuit is good. You should have less than 0.3 volts at the pump ground at the connector to battery negative. If it is higher than that, the ground has resistance or is open. If have power and good ground at the pump connector, more than likely there is a problem inside the tank. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

And you should have a fuel pressure gauge installed during all of this to monitor. Thanks for the help all. I did a jumper wire from 30 to 87 and that ran the pump and gas pumped all the way to the fuel rail where I had the fuel line disconnected. I've had the fuel pressure gauge on it a lot and only get 3 psi. Can the fuel injection pressure damper on the rail cause a fuel restriction ?

No, you have a problem with the pump. That doesn't mean just slap a new pump in. out of an abdunance of caution check the engine oil for evidence of fuel. did you look for fuel filter....

So I'm headed back to work on car on Saturday. Other than checking for fuel in oil I don't know what else to. Check or do. Anything else I should do before I have it towed to a car shop?

Update, Camaro is now running. It turns out the air tex pump I put into my car had a faulty fuel pressure regulator. By faulty I mean it wasn't attached and fell off . I went ahead and returned that fuel pump and went to Chevrolet and bought an A/C Delco pump and put in the car at an auto shop. It's fired up. My car is back on the road. Thanks for everyone's help and advice.
