Engine stalls Sign In

I have a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu. It has the 3.1 engine and 290,000 miles on it. Up until about 3 weeks ago I did not have a problem starting the engine. To start it now I have to turn the key while pressing the accelerator at the same time. It constantly stalls now. The engine will only run if my foot is on the accelerator. If I remove my foot the engine dies. What do you think is causing this condition? Any help that you give me will be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Engine stalls Sign In

At that many miles this is open to lots of things. Does car run properly when driving it along with expected power?

Have a scan done even if CEL or SES light is not on it may show something.

Timing chain if original is in question. This is an interferance engine and if it jumps or breaks it's "GAME OVER" for that engine. Hard to tell it's condition without looking at it which takes some work. If suspect and you get there to see it I would just replace it unless it was truly like new.

I find that even relentless care of oil changing and qualities won't help with the nylon (probably still used) cam gear sprocket and the replacement should be all metal if that's the problem. That's a lot of miles for any engine but I find it harder on transverse engines as heat distribution is uneven with air flow over them.

Those engines have been good in my experiance but there is a limit,

T

Re: Engine stalls Sign In

I replaced The Idle Air Control Valve and that corrected the problem. Maybe I can hit the 300,000 mile mark. Gentlemen, thank you very much for your help. Landry.
