Engine stalls when starting warm Sign In

Engine Performance problem
1995 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 120,000 miles

My truck starts fine when it is cold and continues to run well until I shut it off. If I return 20 minutes to an hour later, the engine starts up okay but then sputters. I have to rev the engine to keep the engine running and when I put it in gear, it jerks and coughs with little power. It gives me the sense that either it is getting too little or too much gas. This goes on for about 30-45 seconds then suddenly the engine takes off and I have no more problems with it until I turn it off and it sits for 20+ minutes. I have had it to my mechanic and he is not sure what is causing it. He has check the fuel pressure and that seems to be okay. The fuel filter also checks out as well as the fuel pump. Someone suggestion that may be it had to do with the timing device under the distributor cap however I would think if that was the problem it would do it all the time.

Any Suggestions?

Lou

There is no engine light or any other indicator of a problem. The crazy thing is that after the 45 seconds when starting it warm it takes right off and runs fine until I turn it off. It would seem to me somethihg about the warm engine throwing something off but what?

Either a lean or a rich problem should be setting a check engine light so I would start by having the codes read and find out if the monitor system is even working.

Thanks for the suggestion. I know the last time they put it on the computer to do a diagnostic they received a number of mixed signals. However, that same day the alternator went out, the third in six months and all GM parts, and so I thought that the alternative may have caused the problems with the diagnostic equipment. I will have them check the monitor system.

Lou; I'd like to see what the CTS is reading, on a scanner. A cold engine needs a rich mixture. A warm engine doesn't like it. Also, what are the fuel pressure readings, cold and hot? A CO reading, hot, might give a clue, as well.

Re: Engine stalls when starting warm Sign In

Loren,

Thanks for the suggestion. I do not have the CTS reading however I will pass this on to my mechanic to check. Unfortunately the town I live in has very few repair shops. The one I take it to now is a Chrysler dealership and I have been very happy with their work. However, this problem has them stumped.

Thanks,

Lou
