Ford Escape 2009 - Engine coil replacement - price inquiry

Hello everyone, I have been having some trouble with my 2009 Ford Escape 6 cylinder recently, and I wanted to ask for advice in what happened to my car and the price I paid for it. A couple months ago, I noticed a persisting "Check engine light" showing up, for which I brought my car into the local Ford shop. After a quick diagnose, the repair person told me that one of the engine was havinga misfire code, and thst they will only change that one (instead of all 6). They did the changem and I ended up paying $850 for this replacment ($220 for the part, $630 for the labor). First, I am definitely not an expert on those kind of repair, but looking up online showed me that I could find a 6 engine coil kit for $100. I am not saying this would be the same quality, but that is a 12x price for a similar part. Second, is it fine onyl replacing one or should this been done on all 6? This has been a month now and the "Check engine light" is back, I have another appointment in 7 days. Thanks for your help and consideration, wishing you all a happy new year in advance!

That's a bit of a rip-off but that's what happens when you go to the dealer. I'm sure some of that is diagnostic time that an Independant shop would not have charged you. I see the list price for the coil at $136 and even that is outrageous. You can buy a name brand for under $80. Google the OEM part number DG514 As far as the labor is concerned, it depends which coil had to be changed. The front one are readily accessible and can be changed in less than 15 minutes. the back ones however require removing the intake manifold to access them and the labor is 2.3hr. Either way you paid too much. I would have advised replacing all 3 in the back row. That way you only have that labor once. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
