I had a 2013 Fusion come in with a seized water pump. I priced out a pump and serpentine belt, then checked on the labor time. 6 hours! Holy crap, so I took a quick peek at Mitchell's directions and saw that the pump was under the timing belt (not run by the timing belt).
I saw in the directions a couple special tools (which I didn't have), so I got them coming from Amazon.
So, here's the problem: I wanted to get as much done as I could before the special tools came. I figured I can at least get down to the timing belt, just not remove it yet.
Well, apparently you are not supposed to remove the crank pulley without all the special tools in place holding the crank, flywheel, and cam gears.
The engine has NOT been turned over with the crank pulley off. What can I do from where I'm at to ensure this thing is timed right so I don't go banging valves once it is all back together?
I don't get on this forum much, generally only when I'm desperate. I REALLY appreciate any help.
I've been a mechanic for several years and I am not a hack, I've just somehow managed to completely miss this whole "crank pulley holding the whole engine together" engineering marvel.

I hate that these timing belts have turned into exotic puzzles lately.
I haven't done this one but I just looked at the instructions.
I don't think you are in any big trouble but you may have to remove the valve cover now to get this timed. You haven't cranked the engine so no damage has been done yet. If you are very careful moving things by hand from this point on and don't force anything, you should be OK.
According to Alldata this is a non-interference engine but be careful anyway.
You will likely have to put a wrench on the hex part of the cams to get them aligned to install the holding tool. If you meet any resistance you can tweak the crank a little to get clearance.

OMG! I just watched about 45 minutes of videos on this engine - scary. No room for mistakes tech was paint marking sprockets and did use a new crank bolt? If you are supposed to - do it.
Hours to do this with experience (never did one of these) will probably take you lots longer just triple checking everything is just right.
Did notice counting the cogs of cam's belt up top.
Take your time - no mistakes and wish you luck.
OMG don't drop all those any of the small bolts my luck they find some spot to stay lost forever. Have magnets around can be put on the 1/4 drive extensions may help?

As I see it: The pressure of the crank pulley is what locks the end of the crankshaft to the timing belt gear, without that pressure they can move independently - throwing off timing.
But, the special tool kit has a piece that inserts into the block to place the crank in top dead center and another piece to lock the cams in the correct position. If I can install both tools, then the timing did not change. If I can't, it should have only moved a hair (perhaps built up compression could have caused a slight shift upon loosening the crank), but I should be able to put it back on time using the tools.
The tool kit comes in Monday, so we'll see.

Your theory sounds logical but we both know things rarely fall into place like that. Hopefully you have not removed the timing belt yet which will keep the two cams synched together and they only have to be matched with the crank.

So, to recap; I removed the crank pulley, realized I wasn't supposed to do that, and reinstalled it.
After the tool kit arrived I went about the job per Mitchell's instructions. The engine is to be turned over by hand until the cam timing marks are in the 11:00 position. Then, the crank tool is threaded into the hole in the block - then you turn the engine clockwise until it butts up against that tool and it won't go any further. I did that, and the cam timing marks were at exactly 12:00 as they should be so I assumed the crank didn't slip when I removed the pulley.
I finished the rest of the job and....it didn't start. I was getting no codes and all the data stream items looked fine on the scanner as far as I could tell. After wasting a lot of time staring at the scanner and scratching my head I realized that I did not install the crank pulley in the correct position. The crank sensor reads off the crank pulley (balancer), not the timing belt pulley, or anything else. There is a tool in the kit for aligning the pulley, but Mitchell's instructions are vague and I did it wrong.
So, after removing the crank pulley and reinstalling it the right way (which is a ton of work because I had to reinstall the tools to hold the crank in place) it ran fine.
This is one of those jobs that doesn't seem that bad after you figure it out, but the learning process can be very stressful, and very expensive if you're less lucky than me.

Yep, that's what timing belts are doing to us these days. Everything needs special tools now since VVT came into the picture.
Glad to hear you got it worked out.
