GM 3.8L engine ticking noise (balance shaft?)

I have a 1995 Buick LeSabre with a 3800 engine with 117,000 miles. Lately it has developed an engine ticking noise. A mechanic listened and gave a preliminary diagnosis of a balance shaft problem. A more thorough examination would be necessary to determine the actual problem. Are balance shafts a common problem with these engines? How involved is a replacement? Will engine be damaged if this component is defective and not replaced? Engine has always been serviced regularly and I am the original owner. I do plan to keep this car as it runs great and looks fantastic. Any comments about the ticking noise?

http://www.autozone.com/...artTypeResultSet.htm That's a full kit for teardown of whole engine. I didn't see anything named "balance shaft" anywhere I looked - don't think this uses something like that. Ticking noises are more associated with lifters either sludged, lack of lubrication, worn cam lobe(s) - things not that likely if you know the history and good care from new. This really needs a hands/ears on closer inspection........... T
