1996 GMC C1500 Suburban 5.7L Does anyone know if anything other than a bad egr valve will cause a P1406 code? This is a Jegs crate engine with about 40 miles on it, all new sensors (including the egr valve). I was just curious if there could be another issue before i try testing the new egr valve. Any tips are greatly appreciated! -Marco

That code is for a bad pintle position. Since that valve is self contained with the sensor included, it can only be the valve or the wiring. It's common on an older engine to have chunks of carbon break off and get caught in the pintle, holding it open. You wouldn't need to replace the valve, simply clean the carbon out but don't be surprised if there is more carbon in the engine and it happens again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Marco: "Rebuilt" is light years from new which is just once. Look at the pintle and test it off just push on hard wood you might even see some junk fall out or not carbon or other junk. IDK - might be able to save the gasket if you carefully grease it or the next if needed to swap with your known (thought to be) good one? T
