I bought a used '91 2.5 4cyl Iron Duke for a replacement in my '92 S P/U. I've been having problems trying to get it to run. I replaced the head,intake,exhaust gaskets and found someone has done some repair work on it. Clue #1 was copper gasket spray on head bolts. Clue#2 was everything set for TDC and found through timing marks on cam and crank gears 180 degrees out while #1 piston on compression TDC and rotor on #1 area. After relapping the valves and reassembly, I Repositioned everything for TDC with the help of a Good Year mechanic and test drove it. I couldn't keep it running at the stop light. accelleration was sluggish and after about 3 miles started popping bad. Engine died in the middle of opposing traffic lane entering Taco Time driveway. I popped the hood and found a flourescent orange-red glowing exhaust manifold. I let the engine cool, restarted it and turned the distributor to the right and was able to get it home, 43 miles away. I've replaced the ECM, TBI fuel injector, Spark plugs, and reset everything to TDC and have been trying to get it timed right to run. I've done everything refering to Chilton's and Haynes repair manuals and still cannot get the engine to run in the timing set up for TDC with #1 cap position set according to diagrams. What am I not hitting besides my head against the wall? Can you Show me the correct position in pictures or diagrams. Oh, by the way when trying to set timing I've installed a jumper wire in the "A" and "B" spaces where I retrieve codes under my dash.

Okay... so in trying to figure this out on my own I've researched all I can in these comments and have done something I did on one of my other cars... I took (cut) off the "Catastrophic Cavorter" and found I couldn't gut it like I did on my wagon. The wagon had a ceramic interior that was leaving fragments in my muffler so I took a large screwdriver and broke the remainingportion out leaving a hollow shell and that along with removing the air pump allowed me better performance and more horsepower. Now back to my current ongoing problem with my 2.5 S-series Iron Duke dilemma. I can't simply stab the guts out of it and ended up breaking it open trying to get it of the pipe that goes to the header and am going to replace it with a piece of exhuast pipe. Don't most of these have Platinum in them and what part is it? I also would like to know if it's true that on alot of these distributors they have a timer under the rotor that sometimes wear out and cause problems. Oh Big Dan of the Great White North and Mr. Tom Greenleaf, Please Help me figure this problem out so I can get back to work... Thanks (Eh?) .

Pardon the ignorance but what is an Iron Duke? If cam timing was off 180 you may have damaged the valves or the pistons and that's trouble.

The catastrophic covorters don't plug up for no reason. Dan would say they are murdered and I agree with that. I have seen them go and work the life of the cars. They used to sell - now illegal - blanks for them and that was popular in the 70s and 80s but it didn't make a vehicle perform any better unless converter was plugged and that only covered the problem - not fix it.

I'd do a compression test on this engine and get out the Tylenol and call Paine Webber to see how your stocks are doing!

FYI: London, Ontario and Boston are about the same climate so Dan isn't really in the great white NorthCool

Cool Thanks for the response Tom. The 2.5 4cyl is often referred to as the Iron Duke as the block and head are made of Iron Typically this type of engine is almost indestructable and normally last along time through alot of owner abuse. My original motor lasted 323,520. I'm going to try replacing the distributor and see if that helps. I'll also do a compression ckeck. You must be a cat man according to your pictures, huh? As for your climitology, Aren't they (the locations you named) Warming up also? Again,thanks and have a good one.
