It happened in Vegas!

Las Vegas - 110 degrees. 99 Ford Ranger 6 cyl. 110,000mi I'd been driving for about 7 minutes at about 50 mph. Suddenly, a little hesitation. I glance down at the gauges and the Oil Pressure needle is waving rapidly between normal and none; faster than windshield wipers on high... and then the truck goes dead - like I'd run out of gas. I pull over, try to start it and though the starter's strong and the engine seems like it's going to cooperate, it dies almost immediately. I wait about 10 minutes, start it up and just barely manage to creep this drunk donkey into an empty shopping plaza lot. I lift the hood and see that the oil cap is soiled - pretty much dripping. I open it and there's oil right up to the rim! I call towing and while I've got 45 minutes, I walk to get a soda. When I come back, I start it up - like nothing was ever wrong; no hesitation, and drive it 20 miles home without so much as a sputter. Was it all a mirage? Fuel injector clog? Thermostat? Insurgent oil longing to break free? Was she simply flirting or is this heading towards something serious? Dave - Stoinkst@hotmail.com

1st things 1st.......What happens in Vega$, is suppose to stay in Vega$ Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buttttttttttt,,, since ya let the cat outta bag (sry Tom) I guess it's cool to talk about it now..... You're probably not gonna like this,,,, but intermittens are probably the worse thing to try to track down..... You are basically diag'ing a vehicle that is running fine in the bay... Going off what you say, I would probably be looking in the fuel area but what you said about the gauges could make it electrical to, hopefully there are some memory codes & freeze frame data to help a little but in reality you are gonna be scoping & ramping parts that are doing there job right now but trying to find something far enough out of range that could of cause this problem..... IF you are going to take it in take some time & think back & try and remember everything......with this kind of problem any little detail that you might think is trival, could be important.. Sorry it's probably not answer you are looking for but it's the best I can do........ I will add, if you have any overdue maintance stuff that needs to be done.....it sure wouldn't hurt to do it........
