Noise while accelerating Sign In

2005 Dodge Neon
150,000 miles

My car makes a loud noise while accelerating. Hard to describe. Something like an inconsistent rattle/cough. From inside the car it seems very loud but I can't hear it from outside the car.

The car makes the noise in D or R, but only while the accelerator is depressed and the car is in gear. It makes no noise when I rev the engine in park. It makes no noise when I am idling. It makes no noise while I am driving and take my foot off the accelerator.

The noise occasionally goes away for a while, but returns the next time I drive. Today, for the first time, it made the noise when I pushed hard on the brakes at a stop light- not while coasting up, not while lightly braking, only at the end of braking as I pushed hard.

Thank you for any help you can provide- I will be monitoring the post so I can provide any more information you may need.

Look all over the exhaust for a loose heat shield or something close enough to it to make contact. They can sound quite loud. Make sure all your rubber hangers for the exhaust are good too. Not sure why that would do that during braking but worth looking at.

Could be a bad torque converter. I'd suggest letting a trans specialist listen to it.

Re: Noise while accelerating Sign In

there is nothing obvious hanging down anywhere. the entire length of the exhaust pipe looks rusty but not to the point of holes anywhere. there is some rubber near a joint that looks very worn.
(sorry- i had to google some pics of rubber hangers for exhaust to know what to look for- am i right that that is what you are talking about?)
Is that something I can fix cheap? Could an automotive incompetent like me put a new one on?

Re: Noise while accelerating Sign In

Thanks. That will be my next step if the exhaust fix from the other poster doesn't work. Thanks for the advice.
