Hi, I'm working to start an old machine (Bombardier J5) This machine has a Chrysler T120 engine that is 6 cylinders flat head engine. (1955). This engine has never run since 5 years. The engine turn but never start but seems having different sound that the last time it was turning. I have measured compression and have nothing on every cylinder (tool is working tested on an other engine) How an engine can loose all it compression by never running. Is someone having investigation path for that? Thank you

I guess you're going to have to tear in down to find out. Before doing that first try squirting some oil into the cylinders and check the compression again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thank you for your reply. I did an other test. I removed spark plug and try to inspect inside of cylinder with a camera. I was surprised to see that the cylinder is no going really low in the cylinder. Probably 3/4 inch. I tested 2 cylinders and both seem having the same travel

I guess you're back to tearing the engine down to find the problem. The stroke should be far more than 3/4".

Huh? Can't you put a soft stick down the hole and measure that? I can't think of a reason an engine turns and only that much on each? Flat head, zero compression hope you put some oil down those when put away surprised it didn't lock in place?? T

Hi I have done most investigation today and remove all body part around the engine to get access to it. First it seems that a squirrel or something similar has found that muffler is a nice place to put food storage. There are seeds and similar stuff all inside the manifold (muffler is connected direct on the manifold) I'm on the way to remove the manifold to clean it but not it stock on a bolt. I also try to turn it by hand and it seems really hard to turn. Probably after removing manifold I will have better view on cylinders

A plugged muffler will effect your compression also because it can't breathe.

Yes It is what I was thinking too but never take new measurement. I will clean the manifold and take it again.

Hi Some pause for vacation. I did new test on the engine. Now the manifold is removed and I have put a good quantity of oil in each cylinder. I turned the engine with the starter. I clearly see each piston moving in the engine with what it looked the right sequence. I took other measurements for compression. I have not compression on any of the 6 cylinders. Is it possible that piston rings were stick on the cylinders and breakdown when I turned the engine the first time? Thank you for you help

Could be a lot of things. Stuck or broken rings, stuck valves, head gasket, etc ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Understand that next step is to open the engine
