Power and acceleration

1992 Grand Voyager 3.3 with 188,000 miles. Just driving down the highway at 60 mi an hr., car losses power and acceleration. Just drags as though it wants to quit running. Have to put the pedal to the metal to try to get it out of that mode. Does not happen that often. Have already changed plugs and wires. Same situation can happen at very low speeds with more backfiring and missing. Have to step on the gas to shift out of low to get it moving.

These can be tough. The 1st thing you really need to find out is if this is a fuel, ign, or electrical problem.... Considering it's losing power at high speeds I would probably want to make sure the fuel pump is in good working order and capable of supplying a high volume of fuel. This is a little hard to do without the right tools. What you could do would be to inspect the fuel filter and if it hasn't be changed recently, change it out and see if it makes a difference..... If the check engine light is one, definitely get the codes pulled, there could be some good clues there.....
