Questionable compression

I recently purchased a used (salvage yard) 3.9L engine for my 1997 Dodge Dakota. Spec'd 8.9 compression ratio. Local Dodge dealer tells me that compression should be no less than 100 psi and vary no more than 25 psi between cylinders. My compression measurements show a range from 87 psi to 72 psi. Is this reasonable to expect (and acceptable) from a used engine?

NO!! Engines work on atomized compressed gaseous mixture and the #s you mention are too low. Does it run at all.?? Yes the difference between cylinders should be close and can tell of of a problem. The junkyard are pretty good around me at picking good engines to save but it's a big world. T
