Rough idle/stall ONLY after warm start Ford Ranger Sign In

2002 Ford Ranger 3.0
Automatic
185K miles

Truck runs great, but here's the problem. If i drive the truck at operating temperature for a bit and park it for 10 or 20 minutes, when I go to restart it, starts up fine but after a few moments the idle drops to 2 or 300 rpm and the engine nearly stalls out, but then quickly kicks up to 1000-1200 rpm and then settles at it's normal 7-800 rpm idle. And then all is normal. Truck cold starts great, idles great, drives as it should; its just the warm start issue i explained above and happens every time i restart a warm/hot engine. There are NO check engine light or codes on my ODB reader.

Things i've fixed/replaced on the truck:
idle air controller
MAF sensor
throttle position sensor
cleaned throttle body
cam shaft synchronizer
piston rings/honed cylinders
crank shaft bearings
replaced driver side cylinder head
new fuel pump/filter
All fluids are fresh
new plugs/wires/coil pack
catalytic converts are good and flow appropriately
solid fuel pressure, 60 PSI, and no PSI change when idle nearly stalls
transmission cooler flushed, new tranny filter/fluid
compression is: 170,165,165,160, 165, 163
no vacuum leaks that I can find w

Any thoughts or direction would be great before I take it to the dealership to see if their $200 diagnostic can figure it out.

Thank you

Sounds like you were pretty thorough.
Did you time the synchronizer?

This has to come back to the IAC and throttle body. At that mileage the throttle shafts could be worn out which will play havoc with the idle speed.

Re: Rough idle/stall ONLY after warm start Ford Ranger Sign In

Evening, i had no change in replacing the IAC from old to new...just replaced to know i have a new one since the truck sat for 2 years before i came along to get her back on the road.

ill see what i could do with the throttle body/shaft. Maybe the expanded metal on hot restart is throwing off my air/fuel ratio till the computer picks it up and adjusts appropriately?

As for the synchronizer, i marked the old one in place prior to removal, transferred marks to the new one and install in exact location. Also no change from old to new, another part i replaced for peace of mind and everything was out of my way at the time.

It's not expanded metal. It's the temp sensors changing the mixture as the engine warms.

You really need a scan tool to look at all the sensor data for something off.

At this point you really need to look at some scan data. I would like to see some cold start data And then some data when its acting up. In particular coolant temp Readings and the IAC. steps. Also inspect the Air intake tube Sometimes those can get a split in between the bellows that go unnoticed

Ill check out the intake tube.

I forgot to add the coolant temp sensor was also replaced thinking it was going defective and sending wrong temp to the computer during a warm start, but no change after replacement.

What steps should i take with the IAC? I cleaned out the old one with no change in symptoms and went ahead and replaced it with a new one with no change symptoms.

The coolant temp sensor is not the only temp sensor effecting mixture. Like you have been advised by two different people, you need to see scan tool data.

At this point you really do need to look at some scan data To help pinpoint a problem It really seems like it might be some computer control thing going on.
1 thing you could do is make sure the base idle is set right. You do that by blocking off the air passage in the Throttle body that goes to the IAC And then when the engine is idling it should be at it's base setting which is usually 400RPM Just be careful whatever used to block off the air passes doesn't get sucked into the IAC.

Thanks for all the insight. Gonna to start running down everyone's leads for me.

Here's a quick video of my warm engine idle drop along my cheap data scanner.

Let me know if anything jumps out at you. I'm thinking my timing may be off.

The video is marked private and not viewable.

Also, your ignition timing is fixed and not adjustable.

The engine sounds like it's loading up on fuel. Can you bring up the adaptives (fuel trims) on the scanner while this is happening?

Re: Rough idle/stall ONLY after warm start Ford Ranger Sign In

Your fuel trims were climbing on bank 2 only. I would look for some time of air leak near that bank.

I would probably do a smoke test on the intake. It's pretty hard to find any vacuum leaks any other way on this intake.
