When starting my 98 Z71 it will start but only runs for a few seconds, replaced the fuel pump several years ago, also replaced the fuse for the pump.

What is your fuel pressure?

I could be wrong but I think there's a relay that usually causes the symptoms you're having. I think the relay for the horn is the same so you could try and swap them to see if it takes care of it. Like Nick already said though, you really need to test the fuel pressure.

No, I doubt this is a relay problem. This truck can run without a fuel pump relay because of the oil pressure switch. Now, that is a possibility for the symptoms you describe if the sensor is shorting when the engine builds pressure. you can unplug it to determine that but there are many other things I would be looking at first like fuel pressure just too low Passlock system (look for a security light) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Had the problem with the relay before, already put in a new one, took the cap off the fuel line, gas shot out for just a second then no more pressure, while trying to start. Have not checked fuel pressure, what should it be? What to do to fix the pressure problem, surely not another fuel pump.

Sorry not doubting your prognosis, just would think a fuel pump would last longer than a few years. The last time I changed the pump it was the relay.Should I not hear the pump humming at the fuel tank ?

I didn't give you any prognosis. I told you to check the fuel pressure and stop assuming things. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

If the fuel pressure is low, don't automatically go get another pump. You need to do some voltage testing to determine it is getting proper power and ground prior to throwing a $300 pump at it.
