Sebring Timing-Belt Case Blown Off Sign In

2002 Sebring Convertible Limited 2.7 Liter. Mileage around 75k miles.

Car died on my friend while I was out of the country and wouldn't start. Just a single click noise when turning ignition.

A mechanic had told him that the engine needed to be re-built/replaced.

Just thought I'd check with the pros here and see if they could throw any light on the subject so I can save the towing costs if it's something worth more than the car is!

As you can see in the pictures, the top of the casing is blown off where the timing chain is.

That's all I know so far.

Not sure on this one. Would have to do some tear down and inspection to see what actually failed. Just had a 2.7L apart a few months ago and can't think what actually would go flying through the valve cover like that.

Was there any work done on it recently prior to the problem your having now?

No work was done previously. I guess it's looking like I'll need to take it into the shop to find out what's up on it.

Unsure

Thanks for the responses, Gents
