Smoking Car after Head Gasket Replaced Sign In

I mistakenly purchased a 99 Mits Eclipse with 84,000 from a crook. Found he used additive to hide blown head gasket. I professionally had a head gasket replaced and had head checked for cracks and pressure tested and machined. Mechanic noticed engine had heavy oil or additive to cover up smoke from oil.

Car smokes after one week of repair (most likely a blue smoke, but it looks a little white to me). But no oil in antifreeze and visa-versa. Is there a chance the mechanic did not seal gasket correctly? I was charged for new bolts so I am sure he used new ones. Is it more likely that I have Cylinder ring problems or valve seal problems? (Wouldn't valve seal problems have been found when they tested the head? It seem like low miles to be having these problems or did the apparent overheating of the car before I purchased it damage rings? Or what else might be causing this? What tests can I do?

Re: Smoking Car after Head Gasket Replaced Sign In

Unless the machine shop went as far as removing all the valves for inspection, they would not have seen bad valve seals and it sounds like they only looked for cracks and overheating damage. On the other hand, if they previously overheated the engine bad enoungh, they would have done damage to the pistons, rings and lower end of the engine. The best way to tell which is your problem is by under what conditions you see the smoke.
If you see smoke when the car has been idling for a while and when first taking off after idling, that points to valve problems.

If the engine seems to smoke whenever the RPMs are held above 3000 for an extended time, that points more to rings.
