Sometimes I'm Unable To Go Faster Than 40 mph on HWY Sign In

1. I own a Toyota Corolla, 2008, 140,000 miles.
2. The engine light is on 50% of the time.
3. Sometimes I cannot go faster than 30 - 40 mph on the HWY, even if I floor it.

Someone said it's because my gas cap isn't functioning properly. When that happens it puts the engine in "limp mode" and that's why I'm unable to go fast at times.
Does this make sense? Or is it something else?

4. I'm poor and it would set me back to take it to the dealership.

Stop listening to "somebody"

There are probably 300 different problems that will put that light on. The gas cap is only one of them and that one won't effect the way the engine runs at all.

You need to have the stored codes read and post the stored numbers here. Many auto parts stores will read them for free.

This would be the first place to start
