Ticking noise from motor - Montana Sign In

Year of vehicle - 2000
Make of vehicle (Ford/ Chevrolet) - Pontiac
Model of vehicle ( Taurus/ Cavalier) - Montana
Engine size (2.0/ 5.7) 3.4L V6
Mileage/Kilometers 150000 kms

I was about a block from leaving the house and the motor starting making a load ticking/knocking noise. Turned around and parked it. Pulled off the main belt to see if it was a pully/pump issue but no such luck, left it overnight same issue. Vehicle doesn't have massive amount of kms since last oil change but time wise is probably overdue , moslty short trips in town.

I recorded the ticking sound and uploaded it, hoping it might help narrow things down. Sounds like it is coming from somewhere near the top of the motor.

Sound file can be listened to here ...

Live in a pretty tiny town, minor repairs I could have it towed to local tire/repair shop, major would have to be towed to next town. Any thoughts would be helpful.

An exhaust leak can sound this way but if you believe it to be near the top of the engine, it does sound like a collapsed lifter. If you had some insulated pliers, you might pull one plug wire at a time and see if the noise lessens.

Good recording. Doesn't sound like internal motor problem though. Check things like a broken Harmonic Balancer or broken flywheel, especially if the noise drastically changes when put in gear.

Thanks for the ideas, noise seems to be constant though, doesn't get worse when in gear, stays about the same, quickens of course when engine is reved ..

Try to isolate where the sound is coming from.
