2008 chevy trailblazer with 128,000 miles smaller engine. Leading up....a week before the noise, overinflated tire to 70 pounds and drove that way for several weeks. Then about a week later filled tank.....turned on engine and when i put it in drive i thought someone else was dragging a muffler. I drove that way for a mile noise was so loud....rattling, banging, everything. Then it stopped. Next day i started it and one little faint clink. Nothing since then except a low humming noise when i hit 40. Mechanic said he didn't notice it. Mechanic drove it and put computer on but found nothing. Three places say they can't do much unless it happens again. Scared to drive too far. Thanks for any ideas.

? One tire or all? If that tire couldn't take that and or you drove it till hotter + if hot where you are it probably made a bubble in sidewall as a guess. This is unrelated to fueling up IMO. If you told a mechanic who inspected it with knowing you did that I can't beat an in person inspection. >There has to be marks or evidence of some failure near the wheel you did that too but it may not have caused this problem and is misleading you. Side notes: Tires can usually hold lots more air (cold) to accommodate being too high of pressure when driven fast, hot pavement on a hot day also air alone should increase pressure if contained (tire this case) by about 1PSI for every 10F in more temperature than when filled cold. Cold varies too what it was? Look for evidence, take the wheel off you suspect the most and plain look around, T

Thanks for reply. It is a puzzle that something that sounded so bad just went away (except for the hum).

I'm now thinking this isn't anything to do with overinflated tires/tire now. Things that can make wild noise and go away include heat shields that come un-spot welded can make an assortment of noises. If gone now look for one missing on exhaust parts engine to end of tail-pipe. Hangers for it also. If a half shell of one fell it could have jammed into moving parts of anything while driving along, driveshaft(s) or anything to a wheel. Another is pins for "sway bars" bust and can make all holy hell of a noise because one side stays on the other hasn't fallen totally off yet. Those hit and bang against steering or suspension parts usually lower control arm areas. Take a LOOK, you'll see those intact or not. Use a rubber hammer to hit (things that should tolerate that) exhaust system parts all along. Hit the sway bar even pry on them how and where they mount and in the middle are held in rubber then metal the bolted to frame or body parts that can handle it. A backing plate to brakes possible or a parking brake if drum inside rotors (rear) fell all apart OMG what noise. Use the parking brake - does it work or just travel all the way? That would be a strong clue. The humming could be tires so if tires allow (would be marked if not) cross rotate them. By that FL to RR and FR to LR, follow me? The humming may get worse it's the tires. If enough tread left leave them it takes a lot of miles some will self correct now turning to opposite way relative to road. Bearings make a humm or odd rotory noise when turning then go the other way are different sounds or go away is a strong clue. Unlike OLD vehicles about all use bearing hubs are not serviceable you toss the bad one (some will say do both on that axle) I would do just the one depending on clues. DO CHECK FOR A LOSE WHEEL!!!!! Hope that was first on your check list! It happens - usually left side of vehicles first less likely the right, check them all - NOW! Noises are warnings. If it is lug nuts/bolts the right side tends to self tighten, left tends to loosen the nature of rotation. This was looked at I'm shocked it was missed but stuff happens. Do whatever it takes to find out what it is or was your description sounds like a disaster that's done or more yet to come. If you find nothing go to another shop and tell them - insist on talking to the tech that will be doing the checks or fixes not just a prompt to next tech from a service writer the description would be too long like my ideas and warnings to you right now, Tom

Wow! Thanks so much for all the info. I can't do any of this so a friend who is also a mechanic is going to drive it for me tomorrow. The tires are brand new....put on a month ago. A disaster done or more to come....that's what i was thinking. The only thing it kind of sounded like was a broken catalytic converter....saw it on youtube. But one mechanic said probably not. I am staying off interstates for now. I am going to show your reply to the mechanic tomorrow. He won't mind. I can check parking brake. When you said omg what noise....that sure fits what happened. It didn't lose power or drive bad on the mile home....just the horrible rattling like someone is driving around dragging a muffler. Didn't have phone with me....the one time! I also thought it weird that noise stopped when i put it in park. What i am thinking after reading your reply is that whatever the heck happened, it had to do some kind of damage. Don't think you can dodge a bullet on noise like that. I was also told a rock could have gotten in something and caused the trouble. Two major garages said it would cost a fortune to look for problem......i will let you know if if find out in next few days. You have really helped save us time tomorrow.

YOU CAN CHECK LUG NUTS RIGHT NOW - STOP READING AND DO IT. ************ NEW TIRES A MONTH AGO IS CLOSING IN ON LOOSE LUG NUTS. Everything matters if a wheel is loose. This has a spare and jack - use that lousy lug wrench, left side first but check all. If any found loose this was when new tires went on by all odds said in my mess "mistakes happen" nobody meant it but it sure does happen. Do print or just voice or whatever my post (mile long one) sorry for typos please say where any of it is wrong or confused by one letter - that happens here more than other typing I do, some self-correcting I don't catch. Good luck and check NOW, Tom

Could they have made a mistake when they put new tires on?

Getting lug wrench out now. Will not drive car till I have checked and then will have mechanic friend check again. Some say there are no coincidences. Thanking you again. The reason i sound so clueless....woman who did niot have the sense to take an auto mechanics class. Should be required before you get a license.

It's later, I shut this dang thing off now and then. > So I'm glad this is on the way to a fix. I HAVE TO ADD IF YOU FOUND VERY LOOSE LUG NUTS, THEN DAMAGE TO WHEEL OR STUDS THAT HOLD IT ON EVEN JUST TIGHTENING UP IS'T ENOUGH! > You are a great sport please don't suggest "women" might not know as much about mechanicals of a car vs anyone else - that's just false! The aptitude is there or not without regard to much of any details like that. Back to if found loose or even a lug nut missing then we need a new plan - tow the thing or trailer it it may need a hub and a wheel. Now that's explaining why it hummms as you said adding to the odds this is a mistake about on time for the new tires IDK how far you've gone but some techs (tire shop or not) will put lug nuts all on first by hand then tighten WITH A TORQUE WRENCH now more than ever always do that. Ooops, it's easy to be distracted and plain forget as it drove fine out and to park it no surprise. It takes time, miles for lug nuts to slowly wiggle loose then off totally usually busts studs and or damages wheels! It's 90% or more the left side or left side first because of rotation there a gravity of motion to loosen also meaning "counter-clockwise" on things that spin. ********************** Hope you are done checking now just trivia that isn't a joke about this problem for mega decades on end. Vehicles (many) used to use "left handed threaded lug nuts" on left side of vehicles. Some used left threaded bearing nuts. Many still use left handed nuts bolts on fans (check a table fan for example) all over the cars of today. Blower motors, fans for engines and more for interior things. Forced air ventilation, radio type things that make heat and the list goes on. I'm getting up there but also always owned older cars and things. Those nuts were marked L.E.F.T. right on them! Why did they quit doing that? Because if 1/2 the vehicles did that and others didn't mechanics were busting tight nuts and bolts thinking they are stuck on so much that was the problem. Same cars within a model year read lug nuts! Say what!! YES - know which ones did or didn't was impossible if not marked. I know you'll be safe if you listen and have it's your potential bomb of a vehicle to lose a wheel and the wheel hits another or who knows before you lose all control of it complete with no brakes lost also it's a disaster. Have a great evening I'm shutting this thing down again please let the site and world know what was found and how it was fixed this problem isn't that rare UNFORTUNATELY, Tom
