Unidentified tapping sound

1997 GMC Jimmy, 4.3 Vortec 135,000mi. I have a tapping sound that sounds just like a collapsed lifter. I installed all new lifters and still have the same problem. No evidence of wear on the camshaft. The car idles smoothly, but taps loudly. Tapping gets quieter when the engine is revved. I also thought the timing chain may be loose and slapping the cover, but its not that either. Any suggestions??

How did you determine the camshaft and timing chain were ok? With the lifters - which one was giving you trouble? They don't all just give up at once and the one that was determined bad may not have been bad at all. See it tapping changes when you cancel one spark plug's firing one at a time as there may be another problem entirely, T
