Volvo bus breather tube? Sign In

Okay, well, first of all, I'm a young lady, and I know nothing about mechanics. But I use public transport (buses). I caught the bus last week and I could smell something inside that I can only describe as smelling like oil/diesel fumes. Possibly coming through the aircon vents?

I called the bus company to report it. When I called to follow up, the man said the mechanic found that and I quote "the small plastic breather tube (overflow tube) near the fuel tank at the top of the bus came off."

I didn't know there was a fuel tank at the top of the bus.

I've tried to figure out what this is on google. Is he talking about the one on the crankcase and if not, what is he talking about? Is he talking about the fuel tank vent tube?

In any case, why was the smell coming inside of the bus? And what was it that I was breathing?

This link is a photo of the type of bus it is since I know nothing about its info. All I know is that it's possibly a Volvo.

(Please explain to me in simple English, since I know nothing about mechanics).

Thank you.

I don't know why you are asking about this. Not sure what make it is even though it says so. You reported it, they found it, fixed it so other than it being annoying to you personally you should be done with it - it's theirs to tend to.........

No, I'm the one who had to breathe in dangerous fumes. Why should I be done with it?

It's not just "annoying".

Unless you are planning on fixing their bus for them, you need to address these questions to the bus company. We have no info here.

No you didn't. You simply didn't like the smell and are overreacting. I also doubt you could smell diesel fuel if you wanted to. Diesel powered engines were phased out by the EPA clean air act years ago. They run on compressed natural gas which is not only cheaper as a fuel but doesn't have the emissions of diesel engines. School buses can run diesel, but not urban transit. If these fumes were so dangerous I can assure you I would've died years ago. I spent a decade as a diesel and heavy equipment tech breathing huge quantities of things that are way worse than the little puff of crankcase air you didn't like the smell of. You also sound like one just itching for one of us to say to you that you breathed in some crap just so you can run off to a lawyer and sue. If there was a real issue on that bus the driver would've reported it on his log and the vehicle would be deadlined for service. I know how their system works in a metro fleet and they do inspect and repair things very quickly. If you don't like the bus, buy a car and be free from all those "dangerous fumes" that you feel the bus company wishes to assail you with. The amount of vapors it would take to reach a threatening level in an airspace the size of the interior of a city bus would be more than an engine is capable of producing through its crankcase vent even if you ran a hose directly off the engine and put it under your seat.
