Son has a 2001 golf vr6 engine.Started running rough and died.Started to pull a compression check on it and oil shot all over the garage even on ceiling from open spark plug hole.Took head off and thought may have been bad head gasket but reall it looked good.About half inch of oil was in cyl.Head also looked good.Gonna put it in shop monday.I thought it could be the rings or the piston itself cracked.Any ideas

Was the oil in one cylinder only? If so, which one?

That would be #5 cylinder. When you pulled the spark plug boot out, was the spark plug tube full of oil? If so, maybe oil got down in there when you removed the spark plug. Was the intake runner full of oil? What is the condition of the valve guide seals? Oil can leak down a valve guide and into a cylinder.

Does this vehicle have any engine modifications? Was any recent repair work done prior to the incident?

Techs in the shop are not going to be happy to get that with the head off and parts in a box.

You mean he's not going to get a big discount for doing half of their work for them?

No mods done to engine. Was running fine.No way for oil to get in spark plug hole on this head its on the side of the cyl head not in the middle like the 4 cyl.I am going to take the valve out and look at the guide tommorow.Thats what im thinking it is though.I was just going to put the head in the shop but thought id take a look at that guide .before I do that.See what the shop says about head.If its the piston ring he wants to get another engine instead of replacing all the rings.
