What could be wrong and what should we look at first. When I bought this car I was given all maintence records. I sure would like a suggestion. PLEASE.

Re: car bucking Sign In

The "check engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Re: car bucking Sign In

ok this is what I am reading from Auto zone.

definition---cylinder misfire detected-cylinder number4

explanation----the powertrain control module monitors the crankshaft speed and has detected a misfire condition

Probable cause-----Ignition system fault-spark plus, ignition wires, coil, vacum leak, injector fault, high or low fuel pressure

I may just have a breakdown over this. We are due to leave on vacation in two days

OK, this is a coil on plug system that has 8 coils and they are known for bad coils.
What I would do is replace the #4 coil and all the plugs. Don't drive it on a vacation this way or you'll be buying a new Catalytic Converter too.

#4 is the rear one on the passenger side.

If they knew that, they probably would correct it. For now, you'll be replacing them from time to time.

I'm sure heat is a contributing factor because that one hidden in the back is commonly the first to go.

<<If they knew that, they probably would correct it<< If 'they' made things to last, our economy would go down the toilet. Oh, it already has. Unsure
