1992 chevy lumina 3.1 engine automatic: about 3 weeks ago the eng. developed a miss this miss turned into severe backfires within a few miles a total loss of power......engine shut down and would not restart...miss continued thru trying to start and backfireing also.....replaced crank sensor and also coil packs foud one of the coil packs split......this did not correct the problem....removed ig. module and had it tested at parts store..it tested ok ...but i elected to replace it anyway........the car started right up .......it ran well for apprx.10 miles and the same thing happened.... a small miss that developed into total shutdown........ i replace the coils ign. module and crank sensor thinking one or all could be defective....the car started right up ........the same $#%#@ happened again within 10 to 15 miles ?????? please help i am lost on this one .......wildbillMadMad

wildbill; Got to be aggrivating. Almost always, it is secondary ignition resistance that causes this. Worn spark plugs, high resistance wires. The spark has to go somewhere.Unsure

Once this condition occurs, does it remain the same even after engine cools down or even the next day?
Have you ever tried any of the old parts back on the car again?
What do the plugs look like after this failure?
Have you ever checked compression or vacuum after the problem occurred?

When it stalls/won't start,have you checked to see if there is a loss of spark or fuel?

The Fuel Injectors could be shorting out and shutting down the Quad Drivers in the ECM.

Measure the resistance of the Injectors.Minimum should be 12-13 ohms...
