crank no start
|

|
hi guys this is my friends 2000 civic with one engine code, there is spark and fuel is ok the car starts but won't start. what should I check next compression any ideal will help thank you.

It starts but it won't start huh? All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment. If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money. Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for. These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. 1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on. 2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on. 3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off. 4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test. thank you guys for responding, like you said I approached the problem starting spark, that was ok, fuel was ok I opened the top of the timing belt cover to see if the timing belt is ok and the timing, that was also fine, but when I test the compression it was only 50 PSI, I,m not sure if my gauge is working ok or not, and I don't know where to go from there, it can't be the crank sensor because there carn't spark if that was bad, let me know if you have any ideas like always thank you and may the Lord bless you people.

Can't run with that compression. Get to the bottom of that. ! All compression at 50 PSI - As HT said - wouldn't run at all and get to the bottom of that which means try another gauge that you know is right, T

hello guys all the cylinders have low compression my question is what could cause this, someone suggested clogged air control valve, this is not letting the air getting to the cylinders, what is your opinion on this everything else seems to be ok fuel, fire timing, the compression is 50 psi on all the cylinders, the car cranks but won't start, God bless you all.

eyob07: OK - so far I now believe you have true low compression not enough to fire. What was the "wet" test rusults? You don't know if it's got proper fuel DELIVERY because you see some or smell some what are the #s? Spark - good enough or just shows some? What lead up to this matters now and it's not your car so might be hard to know? Is oil too full and odor of gas? Valve timing may look OK and not be. Not sure if this can shear keys that hold it in place and would be the most common reason if sudden. Way too much fuel could cause cylinder wash to downright damage when or if oil is way overfull now with fluid that isn't oil anymore but damaging. Holes in pistons - who knows? Did this engine suck in water in some flood or something? All question and need to rule things out one by one to see if this is already a total loss or not. Right now compression is a total reason for it not to run the question is how did it go that bad? FYI and not precise but fuel will not fire till perhaps about 115 PSI and maybe only on starting fluid that low. Why it got there and what broke is key now IMO to declare this not worth it or a good reason. Might get some info by putting a cylinder on TDC compression and blow air into plug hole and see if it comes out throttle body or leave oil cap off for some ideas. Doesn't sound good for this engine so far, T

hi guys this might sound stupid but the cause was weak coil, when I test the spark at the ignition cable there was spark but may be it wasn't strong enough to create spark. I after I replace the coil the car started after few cranks. in this matter can I say that the strength of the spark must also be checked not just the spark please correct me if I,m wrong, the car is now running fine and would like to thank you all for your help.

Then your compression checking wasn't done properly as you don't use spark at all to do that. There's another reason lurking that most likely is still valve timing/belt involved, T

Could be the cylinders were washed out from cranking on it causing the low compression when there wasn't enough KV from the coil. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

ya that could be the reason why all the cylinders were producing low compression, like you mentioned there was not enough KV, produced by the coil, but now its all fine again thank you all.

Good to read and good job on finding the solution. Thank you for following up on this. It really helps because it doesn't leave threads open for eternity and people wondering what was done to solve the issue. It's almost like watching a movie. Most people wouldn't like watching a movie half way through to find out the power goes out and they can't see the ending... Closed as solved. Can be reopened upon request by the OP.
