Some ideas to check and questions:

* What did the sludge situation look like? Did any rocker arms have free play?

* A maybe it's not the engine but an accessory. Take belt off for a quick test - if noise is gone it could be the belt or belt driven item.

* What's the history if known and why the low miles? That's ok but if it sat an extended time it may take some use and may clear up.

* My term: Car may have suffered from perhaps a person (older maybe) who wicked over revved engine while cold, a habit my own late Grandfather had but didn't suffer a problem by luck. I've heard of broken or worn cams which might still work but can make noise.

** The oil should have been witnessed if run without valve covers dripping down each rocker arm. Not sure on this engine which to me has a good reputation.

Can you describe the noise a bit - like all ticking both sides, a single ticking, dull muffled bell sound, knock, double knock - anything more for us to help you with?
