Your friend may have saved you future issues, just didn't fix this one. At that mileage you were due for plugs. Get the codes pulled and post the code numbers here. We need the exact numbers, for example P0300 random cyl misfire. Generic descriptions don't help. With the numbers we can narrow it down. Some parts stores offer this service for free.

It's never a bad idea to replace spark plugs. The problem comes when it isn't done right or needs a lot more than the plugs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

You really shouldn't drive it any more until you figure out why it is missing. If the light is flashing and you have either a mechanical problem with the engine or an ignition problem, you'll end up cooking the catalytic converter. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
