1988 s10 blazer 2.8 45,000 miles.my temp gauge on dashboard reads just above 100. should'nt it be higher ? any ideas where i should i should start looking for a fix ?

You could also remove the radiator cap when the engine is cold. Then start the engine and see if coolant is circulating. If it is circulating, you probably have a stuck open or missing thermostat. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

An '88 with only 45k miles? Wow. You could always drive by a shop and ask if they have a laser temp gauge they could use to read the coolant temp. It only takes a second. Your gauge may just be reading wrong. Do you get hot air coming out of the vents?

to both of you guys i put a new therastat in today and to my amazement the temp gauge went up to about 180 from only a ten minute drive and of course it was blowing hot air. issue fixed. tommorow i'll put in anew iac valve and see if my high idle problem will get resolved.i'll post the results . thank's for your reply .

What temp t-stat did you put in? Vehicle's gauges I take as close but in this vehicle should be steady and stay there once warmed up fully. 10 minutes should but depending on the ambient temp may not have reached full stable temp - lots of factors. The idle issue if it stays at 1,000 would be normal IMO then ~7-800 fully warmed up and if it didn't think it was for any reason that would be a reason. Do the cleaning up anyway and glad you have heat again. I'm near certain the spec for the thermostat was 195F and I find very few bad new ones, T

i put in new iac valve the idle is the same as it was to begin with. so. i put the home made iac in and set the idle at 900 rpm.i left the iac connected laying on brake booster hose to watch what it would do.with te engine running the pintle was twitching slightly back and forth i felt it also. the lenth it was extended was about half way out. it semmed like it was trying to extend but not able to.tommorow i'll take it for a ride to get it fully warmed up and see if it extends any farther. i'll post tommorow.

to wrap up the heat issue i put in a thermastat that has 190 stamped on it. if your still with tis post i have a question. on my lower right dash when i turn the key to on the battery icon and a message that says ' check the gauges lights up. is there another that shows the ' ses light ?

Key to "run" position without engine running will and supposed to turn those dash lights on as a way to know that bulbs are working so that's normal. 190F thermostat? Close and if time I'll check but may be off 5F. Is that enough if it should be 195F to cause an issue would surprise me. 180F would be too far off IMO and wonder how exactly calibrated they all are anyway. My experience they have been pretty dang close, T (edit - just checked if correct 192F was exact OE and if yours says 190F and accurate should no longer be part of the issues)

my 98 jimmy was doing that and we found that the heater was plugged. so we took an air compressor and shot air into the heater through the out let hose and took off the radaitor cap so it cleared the entire system the re fill the radaitor now works better then when i bought it

in the last post i wanted to know if ther is a ses light thats supposed to light up along with the other two.if there it's not lighting. next question : from the schematics in the repair manual i got from library there's a brown and whit wire that goes to the ses lightbulb .it's under the dash of course. if i probed this with a test light or volt ohm meter just to see if there is current in the circut . would this be the right way to do it. the red lead from ohmeter to the brown and white wire. the black lead from ohm meter to a common ground ? i just want to check for current. at this time i'm not about to take the dashboard off to replace the bulb.

Pretty sure in this vehicle the SES light should light when starting or perhaps just with key on engine off. Stinks but it's probably the bulb at the age of this now. This may be a vehicle that can get confused if that bulb doesn't work. A maybe if/when bulb is suspect is on some of these you could get at them thru the speaker on the dash when removed with the hands of a two year old or bite the bullet and dash parts right out and do them all, T

Yes - that's the bulb that flashes (amber) and whatever works to know that at least the bulb is good. Some instrument panels are unforgiving and for a 50 cent bulb take a ton of work then you find out you can sneak your hand in another way just to make it easier. Speedo cable in some of these wont allow the whole thing forward and some you just can't reach from underside so you do what you have to to gain access and it's not always by any specific book of instructions, T
