iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

1993 olds 98 regency elite 3800 eng. 145326 mi.
hi,
several wks. ago the check eng. lite came on. it started to run very rough.had it on eng. anylizer, showed code# 22 (throttle position sensor).had it replaced.the check eng. lite would go out but wouldnt stay out.he checked for another code, but nothing showed up.he adjusted the (tps) and the lite wouldnt stay out.he said when he put his scope on it,it showed a drop in voltage when the lit came on and he didnt know why. the car idled very irradicaly he changed the tps thinking it was bad. it didnt help. he gave up on it.he said take it to someone who had a more sophisticated scanner than his.
I took it to another mech.25 yrs exp.he has up to date equip. he scanned it and said the (tps) needed adjusted. he did that and the lite stayed off.when you started the (cold) car it idled perfect till it warmed up and you put it in gear, the eng. speeds up and will pull the car without useing the gas pedal, and when u put in park or neutril it has a very high idle.Turn the key off and start it again,it idles perfecct, put it in gear and it speeds up again. he changed the (throttle body)and now its making a popping and banging sound, like backfire thru the exh.sometime it will move the car when its in park. also still has the fast idle as before and thats when it starts popping.I cant hear it when driving the car,but it just guzzles the gas
now this guy is stumped and says he cant fix it and thats where were at now.
Any and all info.is appreciated. thank you Charlie

These engines have a known problem with the plastic intake manifolds deteriorating and causing both coolant and vacuum leaks. It's a little difficult to verify though.

hi,
thanks for the speedy responce,if I clean the intake
,would spraying WD40around the gasket show me if it leaking vac.I read somewhere where that would show it.I think I read it.
I should of mentioned before that the fuel pressure was checked. Its ok.and no other codes came up

Re: iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

No, it won't because it's not necessarily the gasket that is leaking. The manifolds crack and have passages for EGR and coolant that can be leaking into each other.

I ran it for 45 min.or so this eve idleing.it was ok till I backed it outa the garauge, almost instantly reved up.very fast ldle over 2500 rpms in nuetrol or park.shut the key off and start it again,it idles ok.go figure

Re: iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

As I already stated, it is very hard to diagnose because you have no access to the area. Some experienced mechanics have some listening tricks to make things a little more convincing but short of removing the manifold, there is no good way to diagnose it.
You could do a smoke test but that may not be convincing either.

Re: iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

If I take the intake off, would it be easy to tell if or where it was leaking?? I can wor k on the old cars but the cars with all these sensors and computers are a different animal.Do i need a full fledged mechanic,or could I do this.I was just looking at that plastic top part.If I remove the fuel rail and the ejectors I should be able to take the plastic top off shouldnt I??Is that all I need to check??If you think that is the best chance of that being the problem,Ill take it off.I have book out there.Ill read up on it . Thanks again

I'm sure you could take it off yourself but you may not be able to recognize the problem.

Re: iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

well, I replaced the upper manifold plenum,It didnt help any. runs like before.checked the MAF SENSOR by tapping on it,(repair manuals test)must be ok,it didnt stumble or stall. also cleaned ejectors and installed new rubber O rings. $168.in parts.sorta disapointed to say the least. Do u think I should junk it????
thank you::::charlie
P S I was thinking mabe outa time, but when u first start it it runs like a top until it warms up then it speeds up.u have to shut the key off to stop it from reving and then it makes a hell of a bang or clang, moves the car.that sounds like its from the back part of eng,and trans. Like its trying to engage the trans. is that possible,
what do u think

Nobody advised you to change the manifold. You could have saved yourself a ton of money if you just paid a professional to diagnose it as you were advised to do.

Re: iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

No where in my responses did I tell you to replace the plenum. I advised that is was a common failure and it need to be diagnosed properly which I repeatedly advised you not to do yourself. Yes, I am a professional and I do not change anything without verifying the failure manually first. I'm not there to examine your car and you don't have the knowledge to do it either but you stubbornly decided that you were going to do it your self against my advice.

Re: iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

Hammertime
the reason I got on the internet to see if this matter could be solved is after the other 2 mechanics gave up,I called the GM dealership for help. They charge $90 per hr and said if no codes show up,that its more or less a process of elimination at $90 and hr.Im a retired 74 yr. old man on a fixed income which is hardly getting me by.Im sorry I pissed u off,but thats the reason I didnt go to the GM dealership to have it checked out.The other 2 mechanics are reputable and they gave up.maybe to keep from getting alot of hrs.in it running things down at $40 or $45 and hr.

Re: iratic idleing and popping sounds thru exaust Sign In

You had 2 other mechanics that actually worked on the car and gave up and you thought you were going to resolve it yourself with advice from a forum with no equipment or hands-on help knowledgeable enough to recognize issues?

You have got to be kidding. You might as well invest your money in a crystal ball. I can answer technical questions or advise on procedures but I can't diagnose your car without being there and that was made clear to you.
