lost oil pressure, how do you tell if the oil broke down or if you lost the oil pump

Before you do that, you need to verify that the oil pressure actually is low but checking it with a manual gauge. It's very common for the sender to go bad and just give you a false reading. If you suspect a problem with the oil itself, then just change it.
