popping noise Sign In

1985 gmc 1500 350 engine. when i first start it, it pops through tailpipe. in a coulpe minutes it quits. also whenever im taking off down the road and put some load on engine something sounds like fan hitting radiator, ive checked fan and radiator and found no signs of damage. any ideas. thanks ,frank

The fan problem could be a broken motor mount allowing the engine to lift under torque which will cause the fan to hit the shroud.

shroud dosent show any damage. could it possibly be a loose flywheel bolt as the sound seems to be comming from the rear. but you know how sounds are they are very tricky Crazy

Is this a late carbed engine? Too much fuel could account for noise in exhaust frequently late carbs the choke pull off diaphragms leaked too much to instantly lean mixture but keep just enough choke till warmed up.

This noise from the back? Could be a u-joint. If the set up uses a center bearing I suppose that could cause noise. Check the u-joints first just by grabbing the driveshaft - no motion is acceptable. Some will show tel-tale rust. They can be bad and still no free-play and you get stuck just taking the driveshaft out to really inspect them.

By age now could be other things - differential, leaf springs can make funky noises too and the list goes on,
