I am thinking of buying a used car, however I don't really know anything about cars and the problem I'm told with this vehicle is that This car PASSED Smog (which is good!) on April 4th, but then one of the water hoses broke 5 days later and the engine ran hot... causing a valve to mess up. Even though the engine is messed up, the car still runs. You can go 4-5 miles before it runs hot. hpw much do you think it would cost to get this fixed and how major a problem is it?

Running hot in just four or five miles is not good. How it was in April no longer counts for anything with the history you noted. This car may have a head gasket or head problem now that could be expensive. If you haven't made any commitment to this car I would pass on it or have owner fix it so that it runs properly with a written assurance that it will pass smog tests for you. Here a new owner has to redo the smog testing even if it was just done. Then we just do that every other year but if something is obvious visually it wouldn't pass. Passing the inspection in general is very important to the value of the car as it can cost a fortune to get it to that point, T
