My mechanic replaced my exhaust pipe flange gasket because it had a leak but he put a gasket combined with gasket maker each side of the gasket, now I have a small leak again it was about 2 months ago do you think he used the wrong gasket maker or this combination is just wrong? I will probably clean the flanges and put a new gasket myself more resistant to heat than the original gasket and I wont put gasket maker is it the best thing to do?

It shouldn't need sealer. If he had to use sealer, then there was something wrong at the connection that needs to be found and repaired. Sealer is adding bubble gum where bubble gum shouldn't be used. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sealer was probably used alone and won't work long. I use it on new gaskets so they come apart without problems or scraping next time not to seal EXHAUST gaskets despite it says on a tube of it that it can - it won't, T

Not to mention that some gasket makers are not O2 sensor safe. Year, make, model, and engine size? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Just a note on the exhaust grade gasket products. You really can't "make" a lasting gasket with it. Exhaust temps can spike to 700F up front easily beyond the product's ability. It also needs a couple hours to cure/dry if you will as you don't make a toothpaste mess of it to go down the line. Sorry - said I use it but different reasons. New ones await for common use on my wall for the next job well dry now. Old ones are probably a redo and come right off with no work with just the slightest smear of the stuff it doesn't split gaskets making the work of cleaning the surfaces for a second round. Nobody has 2 hours or a whole day to let the stuff cure so in that case shouldn't be used IMO. It's not used new or would be if it worked for new, T
