Hole on car exhaust system (resonator) Sign In

I have a 1993 Mitubishi Lancer GLXi 1.6 MT at 140000 kms. I checked its underside just now and saw that the resonator of the exaust system has a hole, with some blacking surrounding it. Here is a link to the photo: http://s4.postimg.org/4c8wj4z1p/image.jpg

I don't remember hitting anything under, and I just had an oil change yesterday with semisynthetic oil and tune up. I had the car all checked and they either didn't notice this hole or it just appeared after the oil change and tune up.

What do you guys think? Is not normal, or did the hole appear because of its age (got burned through)?

Thanks!

Re: Hole on car exhaust system (resonator) Sign In

The metal of the muffler expands and contracts with changes in temperature. The metal is pretty thin that encases the unit and it looks like it is corroding from the inside out. With the aid of corrosion eventually the metal can crack. Looks like it might be time for a new muffler.

There is no way someone did that or it was damaged by something. It looks like it has been that way for a while.

Totally with DS on that. It wasn't caused by any damage or neglect. If that was new and damaged it would show a dent or scrape not that corroded stuff so was bad anyway, T

Thank you so much, DS and Tom. About how much would a replacement cost?

Really not too sure on the cost. That vehicle wasn't sold here in the states. I'd say maybe around $200-$250 depending on what needs to be done to get it off and a new one back on.
