My muffler support is detached. Sign In

Hello, I am the owner of a 2004 Toyota Matrix (1,8 L/220 000 km) and I just saw that my muffler support is detached. I asked the opinion of two mechanics: one tells me that it's not serious apart from the noise that can sometimes be heard, the other tells me that it's serious and that it can damage the rest of the exhaust line. What would your opinion be? Thank you for your answers.

What! 2 mechanics didn't jump on the fix for this, I'm shocked.

You can look up all exhaust related parts including hangers.
It's old for exhaust anything unless already done in past few years usually all items front to rear.

Loose or rusted parts are a serious danger to you, passengers and worse if things fall off the vehicles behind you.

Also if leaking toxic gases are not all going out properly plus heated exhaust if aiming at fuel or brake lines a disaster could happen.

Find better help IDK maybe a fix or time for lots of the system?

Tom

Yes, losing support at one point of the exhaust will put excessive stress on the rest of the system and could damage it.

Thanks to answer me so quickly.
Maybe I’m not using the right words, I’m not really familiar with mechanics. Let’s see a picture of my car ! The part of the muffler who has the problem is the tube at the end of exhaust line. It is circle in yellow. It is not detached, just a little bit loose.

We understand what is wrong.

Your muffler runs across the back of the car so the hanger at that tailpipe supports that end of the system. Without it there is nothing supporting that side of the exhaust and that can damage the system.

Your muffler, exhaust pipe to it and the chrome tip look original. I looked it up for single parts one showed welded on hooks to hold rubber hangers unseen in your picture.

If one of those metal hooks broke off one look up showed two there the other isn't enough will also bust off.

An OE system is all welded to probably a gasket in front of converter or two a flex pipe?

It's hard to do just a muffler without welding it on if that's all it was.

Try this. Tap on it (cold) with a rubber hammer or shake the tail pipe too you may hear it's full of rust bits? It may bust right off at an OE weld so watch out for that.

This is routine gravy work for a shop yet ends up costly to get in parts vs the original welding called for or depending "U" clamps called muffler clamps for pipe connections.

I don't understand how 2 mechanics saw this in person and didn't do lots of these at the age the weak rust part is hidden what you see is a aluminum or other coating so doesn't rust fast to look at weakest at welds that defeated that can see it in pic you showed,

Tom
